Equally a Pittsburgh native, this is exactly the way Ham Charcoal-broil should taste. This would exist i of my favorite dishes my mom fabricated when I was younger (paired with pierogies of class). I wouldn't change a matter about this recipe.

This is the same as my mom's recipe except for 2 ingredients. We use Heinz (Pittsburgh) Chili Sauce and nosotros don't use yellowish mustard. The amount of vinegar is 2T and i to 2T of brown sugar. We like them sour. I must say that this recipe is the closest that I've seen! I grew upward 30min northward of the 'burgh.

I used one-half ketchup/half barbeque sauce, added in some fresh minced garlic and I spread garlic butter on the kaiser rolls Then I toasted them. My family unit LOVED these sandwiches. Simple and delicious.

I am originally from Pittsburgh so when I couldn't accomplish my mother to get her recipe I decided to try this one. The flavors are very similar but this sauce is thicker. As well, its very important to utilize Isleys chopped or "chipped" ham, if your region sells information technology. The ham makes this sandwich! My mothers recipe is quite different though, she uses the onion and butter, 1 bottle of Heinz chili sauce, fill up the chili bottle with h2o, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and a ane tablespoon of sugar. So the just reason I gave it this rating was considering of the thickness, was hoping for a thinner sauce.

I grew upwards on these. Can't go chipped ham here in VA so everytime nosotros go "domicile", I normally bring back almost 10 pounds (of Islay'southward) and keep it in the freezer to brand my sandwiches. Tin't spotter a Steeler Super Basin without them!

Just what I was looking for, didn't add the optional relish, just followed the recipe exactly otherwise, and these were corking!

Very good! Being from Pittsburgh, I accept the luxury of ownership Isaly'due south Ham Barbecue Sauce, lol, so I've never made my own, merely thought I would give information technology a shot today. This was super simple to throw together and I actually had everything on manus which made it extra awesome. My family really enjoyed this, and I volition definately be using this recipe again! Thanks for sharing. :)

Very yummy, I did not add all that butter, and i thought it was smashing , i am from Pa and accept never had this only yummy

This was way to sweet, I ended upwards tossing information technology in the trash because no one would eat information technology sorry it just was not for u.s.

Great Pittsburgh original! Very similar to the recipe I wrote in the Pittsburgh Cookbook. @ www.PittsburghCookbook.com

Super! I'm an inner-city Pittsburgher and I always LOVED these. Definitely use HEINZ CHILI SAUCE. Of class, Islays chipped ham is THE best, but other types will substitute. GOOOO STEELERS! PS: I live in Cowboy land at present, and I still drapery my windows with terrible towers!

Excellent gustation and very easy. I go out out the butter, go with extra vinegar for tanginess, and add cloves (~x per lb). If in a hurry, can skip the mustard and Worcestershire.

Can y'all say "Skillful, Existent Good?" That is what my dad said twice during dinner tonight when I stock-still these sandwiches. He doesn't come up to dinner oft, merely I knew he would really enjoy tonight'southward menu. I live in Indiana, and tried 3 grocery delis to purchased chipped chopped ham. None of them knew what I was talking about. I knew Ohio, where my in-laws lived carried it in their stores. So when I went to Ohio this by weekend, I came dwelling with 3 lbs. of it. All it is, is cooked ham that is shaved as thin equally the deli'southward slicer can go. I know I could have gotten that in Indiana, now knowing what it is. Well, I'k here to tell you, it makes a slap-up sandwich. I read the reviews about how much sauce the recipe makes. I made it every bit written, but I let mine slowly simmer for nearly xxx minutes. It had a nice thickness to the sauce when I added the ham. The ham then slowly simmered for about 30 minutes while my potatoes, 'Jalapeno Potatoes'' from AR baked. I didn't have Kaiser Rolls, but did have slider buns, so I toasted those and the sandwich was wonderful on them. This recipe has been in my recipe box since Feb 2011. I'g glad I found the meat and finally got effectually to making them. My family thoroughly enjoyed them, and I know they volition be made again.

This was a great barbecue sandwich! Super tangy and a hint of sweet.I used mesquite smoked shaved ham for this. Information technology turned out very saucy and needed a fleck more than ham to fifty-fifty it out. I cooked information technology and cooked it to see if I could reduce it some and get a improve ratio plus I like a thicker sauce and this was thin. Skillful overall though and we'd swallow it again.

Practiced only also goopy and sweet-never realized this was Pgh favorite!! I lived in Pittsburgh for 43 years and loved Isaly's chipped ham--merely we always made our barbeques by heating the ham with a lilliputian water and a squirt of Worcesterhire sauce--them piling it on a bun and calculation pickle relish and a squirt of Heinz chili sauce..

We liked this a lot. I made the sauce exactly as described. I used picnic ham, chopped upward in a food processor, instead of chopped chipped ham. I don't think I've ever had actual chipped ham, simply I looked up how information technology's made, and the chopped picnic ham seemed similar a reasonable substitute. The rest of my family ate theirs on rolls, just I made mine gluten-free past eating it on lettuce leaves instead of a curl. I call back it would also make a peachy topping for baked or mashed potatoes, rice or pasta.

Best ham barbeque e'er!! I am originally from the Pittsburgh area and grew up with these sandwiches being served at every picnic and family unit gather. A few years agone I constitute that the stores here had begun selling Isaly'south ham (the merely ham to use for Real ham barbeque). I should as well add that I take bought Isaly's at most 4 stores up here and have simply establish Ane deli lady that tin manage to cutting information technology correctly-it has to be so thin you can run across through it but not a pile of ham dust (which I got at ane shop). I decided to share a bit of my childhood with my wife so I bought some and made upwards a crock pot of barbeque and since then have made it a few times it has never been right. I think she was starting to think I was a little crazy talking nearly how good this stuff was supposed to be. Then nosotros made this recipe a few days ago. This is perfect! We made it exactly as written and recommend changing nothing. The balance of sour and sweetness and the thickness of the sauce were exactly what I think. If you want existent ham barbeque do yourself a favor-print this recipe out and get into your kitchen-you're wasting your fourth dimension if you keep looking.

Very good! Closest to the recipe my mom used that I tin find. Just the correct mix of hot, sweetness & sour. Would definitely like to effort it with chili sauce next fourth dimension.

I fabricated this according to the recipe and information technology was a huge hitting at my business firm! I was thinking near what to make for super bowl Sunday and realized I haven't had a ham barbecue sandwich in about 20 years. Unfortunately my mom passed away before I got her recipe just this was spot on! I'm glad I made it and it brought some happiness to our business firm watching a super bowl that the Steelers weren't in!

Great ham qb. Unless your from Pittsburgh area your not going to find or know what chipped ham is. many people believe shaved is the same but information technology's not. Information technology doesn't thing it's still a great sandwich & I'm glad to see information technology listed here! If you like barbque you lot will like this ane!
02/13/2015
Made information technology just the way it was written...succulent! Even my picky kid ate this awesome sandwich. Served with pirogies fried in butter and onions! I will make with ii pounds of chipped ham and half the butter next time, but otherwise wouldn't change a thing!

Remembered this from when I lived in Mt Lebanon PA 1954 - 1956 Love it - made information technology a fleck differently - put all ingredients in deep pan and cooked slowly on acme of the stove. Will need to try the printed (oven) method when I have more time. Tried it out on my wife - she's having a girls gaggle tomorrow and will allow them attempt it. Thanks for the memories! PETE

Amazing!

These reminded me of the barbecued ham sandwiches my aunt used to make when I was a child (she is not from Pittsburgh). My family liked these, although I thought they were a tad too sweet, then I would leave out the pickle relish next time. Would definitely make again!

My grandmother used to make these when we would visit. She would take them ready for usa when nosotros walked in the door. She gave me the recipe years ago, just before she passed abroad. Sadly, I lost the recipe before long thereafter. I was thrilled when I found this recipe afterward a quick search and made them the next day and... it was like I walked into her Pittsburgh dwelling on a Friday dark after a 3.5 60 minutes bulldoze!!! And my kids and husband loved them as well. Cheers and so much for sharing this recipe!!

Made today for Mother's Day and it was a huge success. The sauce is incredible, tin can't look to make it again. I changed nothing. Thank you for this recipe.

I'm a pittsburgh girl. These are as close to my moms as you tin become.
09/09/2018
This was crawly! Reminds me of dwelling house and the chipped ham my dad used to make just better. This is going to be great for the Steelers game later today!
06/25/2018
My husband is from Pittsburgh and he likes this recipe better than his mom's! (Of course that makes me grinning just a little.)
05/03/2019
I fabricated these with a few changes, and they came out great! I used leftover spiral ham slices cut upwards into bite-sized pieces. I also greatly reduced the amount of ketchup, since my husband is not a large fan of ketchup, and used spicy brownish mustard instead of yellowish mustard.

I am from Pittsburgh and this was a game day staple at our house. We never added sweet savor to ours. I would think that would brand it very sweet and runny. Too, equally latchkey kids, we frequently made our ain every bit an after schoolhouse snack with chipped ham and bbq sauce heated through in a sauce pan and eaten on a hamburger bun! NEVER enjoy though!

Far besides sour.

I didn't wait much out of this recipe fifty-fifty with all the neat reviews but this was delicious! I cutting the recipe to 4 servings and had some green onions to utilize upwardly so I didn't use the regular chopped onion the recipe chosen for. Both the hub and I enjoyed this. I will definitely brand information technology once again.

This was really proficient and piece of cake to make - especially to a gal who hasn't been back to the 'burgh in a while! I had a left over bottle of Heinz chili sauce, then I used that up and added enough ketchup to equal the 2 cups. I also left out the mustard only because I don't like information technology. It was delicious!
01/09/2016
Just as proficient every bit I remember. I messed up and used 1/4 cup butter simply it was yet skillful. Only two of us in the house so we have plenty of leftovers. We enjoyed it!
